Claims World Media Festival’s Top Entertainment Prize; Lands Three Other Awards and Additional Noms

HAMBURG, GERMANY (April 30, 2020) Sara Chinbuah and the World Media Festival team announced earlier this week the recipients of their 21st annual celebration of the best in global television series and corporate media.

Don Carmody Television (DCTV) family drama series Northern Rescue, co-commissioned by the CBC and Netflix, took home four prizes, including top honour, in the World Media Festival’s annual competition. The tribute includes gold distinction across the Entertainment segment in two categories: Best Continuing Series & Serial Programmes, and Best Programme Openers and Titles.

The World Media Festival judges awarded the DCTV scripted series the Entertainment segment’s Grand Award as the top prize amongst all Entertainment segment winners.

The freshman series was also recognized with the “Magic Eye” special award for Best Camerawork.

Northern Rescue was lensed by Canadian cinematographer, Brett van Dyke CSC (Carter). Van Dyke is also concurrently in the running for a Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award, where he stands in nomination for Best Cinematography in Television – Children/Youth for his work on Northern Rescue.

Opening titles for the award-winning series were created by Toronto-based agency, Rushlane Creative.

The drama series, co-created by David Cormican (Between), Dwayne Hill (Peg + Cat) and Mark Bacci (In The Name of the Nameless), also picked up double nominations for Michelle Szemberg (Kick-Ass 2) and Daniel Sadler (Cardinal) for Best Editing in a Live-Action Family Series or MOW category in the upcoming Canadian Cinema Editors Awards.

The World Media Festival trophies and pending Canadian Society of Cinematographers and Canadian Cinema Editors accolades follow a double win (out of four total nominations, including two for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Family Series) for the series at the Directors Guild of Canada Awards announced late last year (2019), where programme editor Michelle Szemberg won for Outstanding Achievement in Picture Editing – Comedy or Family Series, alongside a team win for Jam Post (Frontier) in the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Comedy or Family Series category.

Northern Rescue producers and DCTV principals, Don Carmody (Chicago) and Cormican, were recently nominated for an International Emmy® Award for their NHK and Netflix co-commissioned live-action mini-series Tokyo Trial, which stars Jonathan Hyde, Marcel Hensema, Paul Freeman and Irrfan Khan. Carmody and Cormican are presently at work developing and adapting New York Times bestselling authors P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast’s House of Night novels into a live-action television series with French co-producing partners Davis Films (Silent Hill).
